CHAPTER SEVEN
AWAKE half the night, Lisa was dismayed to find it was already gone eight when she surfaced from sleep. She showered quickly, and donned a bikini under her light cotton tunic in anticipation of the swim to come, packing bra and briefs in a tote bag for later. Whatever the outcome, she was going to make the most of today, she thought, viewing her sun-bronzed face and sparkling eyes in the mirror.
She was on her way to the door when the telephone rang.
âI overslept,â she announced, taking it for granted who would be calling at this hour. âIâll be there in a few minutes.â
âYouâd better be,â came the tolerant reply. âPatience isnât one of my virtues.â
Lisa laughed, warmed by the very sound of Brettâs voice. âYouâll have to practise more.â
âMeaning youâre in the habit of keeping a man waiting?â
âA womanâs prerogative,â she rejoined lightly.
âNot one I recognise, so take heed.â His tone was mockserious. âYouâve got ten minutes.â
She might have made it if she hadnât bumped into Gary Conway while taking a short cut through the lobby.
âYouâd no business going out on Seajade yesterday,â he said without preamble. âSheâs strictly for the use of paying guests.â
âI was invited by a paying guest,â Lisa responded.
âThatâs not the point. How do you think the rest of the staff feel about it?â
âI havenât asked them.â She hesitated, recognising the validity in what he was saying yet at something of a loss as to what to do about it. âBrett didnât seem to object,â was all she could come up with.
âYou think youâve got both him and Hanson wrapped round your little finger, donât you?â he snapped. âI dare say you might have in Hansonâs case, but you can forget any hopes you might be entertaining in Brettâs direction. Heâs hardly likely to settle for little Miss Nobody!â
Lisa made every effort to retain an outer poise. âIâm sure youâre right. But then I donât happen to consider myself a nobody.â
Garyâs colour deepened a little beneath his tan. When he spoke again it was in a more muted note. âIâm directly responsible for your being here, Lisa. I donât want to see you get hurt.â
The sudden change of mood was disconcerting. Lisa hardly knew how to react. âIf Iâm what you think I am, why should it worry you?â she said stiffly.
âIâd have thought that pretty obvious.â His tone was wry. âYou gave me every reason to believe we had something going for us back in London. Why else would I have gone out on a limb to get you here? Youâre good at what you do, sure, but I could have found someone closer to home.â
Lisa gazed at him unhappily. âIf I did give that impression then it was totally unintentional. I liked you, of course. We seemed to get along so well. I just never imaginedâââ
âItâs so much water under the bridge now,â he interrupted with a return to brusqueness. âBrettâs going back to Boston again in the morning, in case you didnât know.
